Miami, FL – October 21, 2015 – World Red Eye’s Cultural Exchanges Speaker Series, Presented by Perrier‐Jouët and Absolut Elyx, kicked off for its inaugural installment, exploring the history and future of nightlife at the Pérez Art Museum Miami. Some of the biggest names in Miami nightlife took the stage to discuss the city’s riveting after-hours scene and offer incredible firsthand accounts, exploring the future possibilities that lie ahead for a city in its prime.

Led by famed ‘Lensman of South Beach,’ Seth Browarnik and moderated by Emmy award-winning producer, Alfred Spellman, panelists Chris Paciello, David Grutman, Eric Milon, Navin Chatani, and Nicola Siervo discussed the EDM/DJ boom; the rise of music festivals and their impact on nightclubs; the transformation of South Beach from sleepy bedroom town to glittering mecca; restored ties with Cuba and how the change will effect Miami; and Millennials nightlife trends, among other relevant topics. “These guys represent the past, present, and the future of Miami nightlife,” says World Red Eye founder Seth Browarnik.

This is the first in series of upcoming cultural exchanges World Red Eye will be hosting on a range of topics in different locations with subjects to include: real estate, art and design and fashion.

Miami, FL – November 7, 2015 – Philanthropists, socialites and fashion mavens gathered for the 21st Annual InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Ball. Welcoming guests to the mythology-themed Ball were the “Three Amigos” – Shareef Malnik, philanthropist, Make-A-Wish Board Chairman Elect, and owner of The Forge Restaurant | Wine Bar; Robert Hill, Gala Host and InterContinental Miami General Manager; and Norm Wedderburn, President and CEO of Make-A-Wish Southern Florida; along with actress and filmmaker Gabrielle Anwar as celebrity emcee for the fifth consecutive year.

Grammy Award-winning entertainer Marc Anthony was the evening’s special performer and, together with his renowned orchestra, had guests singing along to his hits including “I Need to Know,” “Floor Palida,” and “Vivir Mi Vida.” Anthony also surprised the crowd with a special cover of The Eagle’s “Hotel California.”

Following the performance, along with the Wish auction, was the InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Nightclub, presented by E11EVEN-LIV and chaired by Shareef Malnik and Vice Chairman Michael Capponi, and co-produced by Maxwell Blandford and Clif Loftin. The Nightclub featured DJ Nathan Asher, DJ Joe Dert, and globally renowned DJ and producer Chuckie, who pioneered the rapidly proliferating Dirty Dutch and kept the party going well into the night.

Q&A: Fashion for Breakfast at Cecconi’s – Kit and Ace

$

Miami Beach, FL – November – Cecconi’s was packed with trendsetters and fashionistas for another installment of the Fashion for Breakfast series. Racked Miami’s Ashley Brozic and Kit & Ace’s co-founder JJ Wilson discussed the brand’s big move to Miami, how it got its start and, how Miamians are benefitting from the styles.

World Red Eye caught up with JJ Wilson, who gave us a close look to how Kit and Ace started and what they are hoping to do through their comfort wear.

2-Ashley Brozic & JJ Wilson1_new

Ashley Brozic & JJ Wilson

WRE: Tell us about how Kit and Ace started?

JW: We looked at our friends and family – and ourselves – and saw a group of people living busy, “full-contact” lives who were in search of functional clothing that could keep up, but was still stylish and luxurious. With Shannon’s institutional knowledge, we were able to create an entirely new category of apparel, which we call Technical Luxury™, by elevating luxury fabrics (like cashmere) with technical fibres to make them machine-washable and have added stretch.

3-Ashley Brozic & JJ Wilson speaking6_new

Ashley Brozic & JJ Wilson

WRE: What sets your brand apart from other brands that have a similar idea?

JW: Kit and Ace is turning the athleisure trend on its head. Rather than making athletic clothing that can be worn day to day, we’re making streetwear with attributes suited to movement. We recognized a void in the luxury apparel industry, which led us to create Qemir™, our family of proprietary fabrics that combine technical attributes with luxury fibres. We saw a need for products that offer comfort and functionality without sacrificing style.

WRE: Where do you guys draw inspiration from in your designs?

JW: We’re inspired by and design for the creative class, which to us includes anyone driven by the impact they have on the world around them. These people lead busy lives and need clothing that can take you from morning to night.

3.5-Ashley Brozic & JJ Wilson speaking10_new

WRE: Tell us about some of the fabrics you use?

JW: All of our products are made from proprietary fabrics within the Qemir™ family. Our foundational fabric is called Technical Cashmere™. To create it, we’ve taken the soft, luxurious aspects of traditional cashmere and enhanced it with technical fibres to make the fabric more durable, machine-washable, and dryer-friendly.

WRE: Who comes up with the styles? What does that creative process look like?

JW: Shannon leads the Kit and Ace design team and she’s the brain behind our design process. She has an incredible wealth of knowledge, which she and the rest of the team apply to create luxurious, technical pieces for busy people.   We’re inspired by the creative class – which includes those closest to us, like friends and family – and we seek to make clothing that both simplifies and enhances their lives.

4-Ashley Brozic & JJ Wilson speaking8_new

WRE: Describe the kind of person who is rocking your clothing?

JW: Because we’ve grown so quickly over the past year, our customer base covers a wide range of people all over the world.

WRE: What kind of message do you want Kit and Ace styles to give out?

JW: There isn’t a particular message behind our clothes, but we know that our customers have an appreciation and consideration for luxurious, quality products.

5-Ashley Brozic & JJ Wilson speaking9_new

WRE: Where do you see Kit and Ace 10 years from now?

JW: We’re a little more than a year old and we’ve already opened 43 shops, so it’s hard to say what we’ll be doing in ten years. We hope still be at the forefront of innovative, technical design.

Coral Gables, FL – November 10, 2015 – It was an afternoon of exploring the latest trends as Neiman Marcus Coral Gables hosted Creative Director Joseph Altuzarra, of ALTUZARRA, for an exclusive lunch and fashion show. Joseph presented his Spring 2016 Collection to over 40 guests, including hosts, Gianconda Baltodana, Evangeline Delgado, and Jenine Howard.

World Red Eye was able to catch up with Altuzarra, where he told us a bit about how he first got his start in the fashion world, as well as what we can find him doing when he visits Miami.

2-Joseph Altuzarra1

Joseph Altuzarra

WRE: How did you first get your start in design?

JA: I entered design in an unconventional way. I didn’t study design at school, but instead took up Art History at Swarthmore. When I decided to go into fashion, I interned at Marc Jacobs and later worked for Proenza Schouler and Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy to gain experience, as well as apprenticing for a pattern maker, before starting my own brand.

2-Joseph Altuzarra3

The Altuzarra woman has a pragmatic approach to dressing.

Joseph Alturzarra

3-Joseph Altuzarra2

WRE: Has your culture had an influenced your brand/design aesthetic?

JA: Growing up in Paris with a multicultural background (my mother is American-Chinese, and my father is French) has definitely informed Altuzarra’s aesthetic. The Altuzarra woman has a pragmatic approach to dressing, that feels very American, with a seductive and sexy outlook, which is quite French.

WRE: Where do you look for inspiration for each collection?

JA: It varies from season to season, from books to films. For Spring for example, I was inspired by exploring the Basque side of my heritage, along with celebrating the beauty and rawness of certain natural materials and textures.

4-Joseph Altuzarra with models2

WRE: What has been the most memorable moment of your career thus far?

JA: There have been many, but being able to grow, cultivate and work with a fantastic team has definitely been rewarding.

5-Joseph Altuzarra with models

Joseph Altuzarra, Samantha Shurafa, & Lejla Szabo

WRE: What do you like to do when you are in Miami?

JA: I like to relax, and explore new restaurants, and if I’m in town in December, check out Design Miami and Art Basel.

Q&A: The Problem Kids

Problem Kids

Miami, FL – November 25, 2015 – With a sound as vibrant as the city that made them, Problem Kids are a 6-piece Miami band on a mission to spread their infectious music to the rest of the world. Just one spin of PK and it’s apparent they are a true product of their culturally-diverse, frenetic environment. Is it Island Hop? Tropical Urban? Nu Wave Rap?! Label them what you will, but with a fiery mix of street-wise “Spanglish” rhymes, pulsating beats, and luscious sing-along melodies, one thing is for certain – these Kids aren’t playing around.

World Red Eye spent some time with the Problem Kids, where they gave us look into what a typical rehearsal is like, as well as let us tag along for their epic performance at Sidebar. We chatted with Mario Obregon of Problem Kids who spoke about how they formed, what they’re currently up to and what we can expect from them in the future.

Studio Rehearsal

2-Bert Casanova, Mario Obregon, & Tish Martinez1

Bert Casanova, Mario Obregon, & Tish Martinez of Problem Kids

WRE: How did Problem Kids form?

MO: Problem Kids formed about three years ago, but the journey really began in 2010 with MC’s Marty and Tish forming the “DreamTeam.” We began making music together while Tish was studying Audio Engineering at SAE. As we started putting out songs online, our group of friends really enjoyed what they were hearing. At that point we decided we wanted to start performing live, so we called upon our good friend Nick Lebess, who is currently our drummer, to perform our first show with us alongside DJ Ethics. After that first show, we knew that live music was the way we wanted to go. The rest, as they say, is history.

3-Bert Casanova, Mario Obregon, Tish Martinez & Omar Williams

Bert Casanova, Mario Obregon, Tish Martinez & Omar Williams of Problem Kids

WRE: How has Problem Kids evolved to now? Are all original members still apart of the band?

MO: Like everything in life, PK has evolved and grown since those early days. When we first began, we had Tish and Marty as the MC’s, Nick on the drums, Joseph Espinoza (Jesp) on the bass, Jorge Velazquez on the Guitar, and Bert Casanova on the keys & sax. Jesp and Jorge have since moved on to work on other projects, so currently we have Eddy Davis on Bass & Omar Williams on guitar, along with Tish, Marty, Nick and Bert. Those are the current Problem Kids!

3.5-Bert Casanova & Mario Obregon

4-Bert Casanova & Omar Williams

Bert Casanova & Omar Williams of Problem Kids

WRE: What genre do you consider yourselves? Describe Problem Kids’ sound.

MO: This is a questions that we get a lot, because if you have ever been to a PK show you know that we like to take you on a musical voyage through our life and musical experiences. We don’t necessarily like to box ourselves into a genre, because we feel like all types of music have influenced us. But we would say hip hop and rock are definitely at the core of our sound, with a tinge of salsa and R&B mixed in. You can hear all of those different genres in our music.

WRE: You guys have a very unique sound, where do you draw your inspiration from?

MO: Having a unique sound is very important to us, so thank you for that. Inspiration for the PK sound comes from everything around us. Whether it be from a past relationship, a hardship, or from good times, inspiration comes in all shapes and sizes. Ultimately, we like to get inspiration from actual things that happen in our lives and our family history, like when my grandparents were forced to leave Cuba 60s years ago. Those stories resonate through us on stage. When it comes from something real, the audience will feel that and that’s our ultimate goal.

5-Omar Williams1

We strive to make our lyrics and sound universal so that it appeals to people like us going through the same things, but also resonates with your Abuelo/Abuela and the younger kids out there.

9-Mario Obregon

Mario Obregon of Problem Kids

WRE: Top 5 bands who have been a major influence to Problem Kids?

MO: Only 5?!? Hahah man, this list could go on forever, but if we HAVE to narrow it down, we would have to say 2Pac, Wu Tang Clan, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Roots, and Buena Vista Social Club. Oh, and Sade. That’s 6, but we can’t leave out Sade.

WRE: Who do you guys want your music to speak to?

MO: We strive to make our lyrics and sound universal so that it appeals to people like us going through the same things, but also resonates with your abuelo/abuela and the younger kids out there. A lot of music today has become very materialistic and has lost that substance that has made it last for so long. The stories we tell come from an honest place, and we feel that honesty is shared with our fans.

10-Problem Kids

Problem Kids

11-Ed Davis, Bert Casanova, & Tish Martinez

Ed Davis, Bert Casanova, & Tish Martinez

WRE: Your lyrics are very thought out, do you all take part in writing them?

MO: Our lyrical content is very important to the Problem Kids sound. While we all partake in the creative process, most of the lyrics are written by Marty and Tish, the Mc’s of the group. Once they bring in an idea, that is when the band gets going and creates their own musical “lyrics” around the words. The same applies when the band comes up with a gnarly groove. We all go in and brainstorm how we want to music to sound, and then the MC’s write the lyrics to that particular song. This is one of the hardest, yet most rewarding processes of being a part of this band. There is nothing better than seeing a song come to life from a simple idea.

12-Tish Martinez

Tish Martinez

WRE: Where is the best place here in Miami for you guys to get your creative juices flowing?

MO: Miami is an amazing city, and we thank it for being a place where we have been able to grow up and learn from every day. There is so much culture and energy in this city that we can get the juices flowing from a simple coffee stop at Versailles, a Saturday spent at the beach, or just roaming the streets of Wynwood and taking in all the city has to offer. We are blessed to live in such a culturally diverse community.

WRE: How often do you guys practice and play?

MO: We try and get together as often as we can. You have to remember there is six of us in this band, so scheduling and getting everyone on the same page is one of the hardest things. But we love making music and getting together, so whenever we have a chance to, we make it happen.

WRE: Most memorable moment as a band so far?

MO: We would have to say our most memorable moment has been winning the $5,000 grand prize at the Magic City contest down here in Miami. We went up against some great bands from down here and came out victorious. It helps to know that our hard work pays off, you know? A close second was the Southeast tour we did last year where we got to perform in Gainesville, Atlanta, and Mobile, AL to name a few. The response in other cities was amazing. Hopefully we’ll be out on the road again soon so be on the lookout!

WRE: In 10 years from now, what do you guys hope to have gained?

MO: Problem Kids has been an amazing outlet for all of us. From the friendships we have gained to the people we have met along the way, this journey is just beginning for us. We just hope that we can bring good music that everyone in the world can enjoy and maybe even learn something from.
